I. Read the Short Story Given!

Answer the following questions bellow!

1. What do you know about Hamlet?

Hamlet is a young prince of Denmark who are kind and thoughtful. He was very fond of his father, who is also very wise. But he could not do anything when he learned that his father was killed. He considers that he is a coward who could not establish the truth. But in the end he becomes a brave prince and able to avenge his father's death.

2. What happened to his father? And why?

His father died suddenly in mysterious ways when he was asleep in his garden, he was bitten by a snake until she died. But actually doing all that it is his own brother Claudius.

3. What strange story was told to Hamlet?

For three consecutive nights, the guard of soldiers that kept watch at night have seen a ghost. Horatio, one of his friends also have seen it. The ghost appear at midnight. He was dressed in armor like the clothes are always subject to the king, and his face was very similar to the king.

4. What did the ghost tell Hamlet?

The ghost said that he had been murdered. And the person who killed him in the kingdom. He also tells Hamlet to avenge.

5. What strange resolution did Hamlet make?

He would behave outwardly as a madman, for in that way he thought his uncle would be most unlikely to suspect him and also he would be able in that way to hide his feelings better.

6. How did Hamlet make use of wondering artists?

He make use of wondering artist by playing the drama "The Murder of Gonzago". The drama tells of horrific murder in which the duke in the garden named Gonzago poisoned by his brother who later married his widow. If Claudius and queen watch the drama, they will feel guilty for having committed a crime.

7. What happened when the show was being performed?

Claudius and Queen began to pale and realize that the drama is similar to what they have done. With haste they fled from the event.

8. Why did Claudius send Hamlet to England?

Because he thinks that Hamlet is dangerous and know the real truth that he had killed the king. And he was afraid that Hamlet tells everything to others.

9. How did Claudius make use of Laertes anger against the slayer of his father Polonius?

He also challenged Laertes and Hamlet to a friendly. However, he was persuaded Laertes to use a sharp pointed sword (which is forbidden in the game) to put poison on it. Claudius hopes that Hamlet dies in this game so no one ever suspected him.

10. What make the Queen die? How did Claudius, Laertes, and Hamlet die?

Queen died because he drank a bowl of grapes that have been poisoned by Claudius. While Claudius died because he accidentally drank a bowl of grapes that have been poisoned by his own, and he stabbed Hamlet with a poisoned weapon which had wounded Laertes and himself. Laertes puncturing the skin of Hamlet with a sudden thrust with the sword so that toxic injury and poison Hamlet. Then Hamlet taking arms and wounding Laertes until he was exposed to poison themselves to death.

2. Characterization

Hamlet : Hamlet is a prince of a kind and thoughtful. He loved hunting and sports. Although at first he was a coward, but he turned into someone who is brave.

The King : The King is someone who is kind and thoughtful.

Gertrude : The Queen is a woman who is unfaithful. she also betrayed the king's heart and had an affair with Claudius.

Claudius : Claudius is the brother of the king. But he was actually killed the king with the cruel to obtain the throne.

Horatio : Horatio is Hamlet's best friend. He also includes a loyal friend and willing to help friends in times of difficulty.

Polonius : Polonius is the father of Laertes and Ophelia. He is famous for his wisdom. He wants Hamlet to marry Ophelia.

Ophelia : Ophelia is the son of Polonius. He is a very pretty girl and she loved Hamlet. Ophelia is an obedient girl and always obeyed his father.

Laertes : Laertes is the brother of Ophelia. He loved Ophelia. He was also very sad to learn that Ophelia committed suicide.

3. Setting

Place : in the Orchard of the King, in the queen’s apartment, in the kingdom, England, and in the battle area.

Time : in the afternoon when the Hamlet’s father died, in the midnight when the ghost appeared.

4. Plot

The plot of this story begins when the king died under mysterious circumstances. And Hamlet knows that his father had killed his own brother Claudius. his father's ghost told Hamlet to avenge. But he was unable to do so and he sought the truth. But after he learned the truth, he was trying to find a way to kill the king. But not only the king who was killed in this story, but all the characters, father, mother, lover, even his death itself was. Only his best friends who still live with the hope he would tell the truth.

5. Climax

Claudius drinks two bowls of wine, he did not realize that he took the wine which contains deadly poison. When Hamlet was Laertes puncturing the skin with the push of a sudden. Hamlet gets angry when he knows that Laertes uses tapered foil. He attempted to seize weapons and wounded Laertes Laertes with the poisoned foil. The queen suddenly fell and cried she had been poisoned and died instantly. Laertes also falls to the ground being hurt by the poison itself. Claudius was experiencing the same thing, knowing that he would soon die, he asked forgiveness with his last breath, but Hamlet immediately stabbed with a poisoned weapon, so he died instantly.

6. Resolution

Hamlet is exposed to toxins made Laertes, Horatio asked to tell the true story of his father's murder and revenge. Although at first Horatio to drink the poisoned wine and accompany the death of Hamlet, but Hamlet begged him, so he tells the full story of the tragedy of the world.

7. Moral Message

Wealth makes everyone blind to everything. However, seek wealth by lawful means and do not take it from someone other than our rights. We should always be thankful with what we have, because greed is not going to make us happy until whenever.

Hamlet is a young Prince of Denmark is wise and he loved his father. His father was a good king and the wise. However, his father died suddenly in a very mysterious, that is bitten by a snake while he was sleeping in the garden. Hamlet was very sad because his father was the most he loved. Not long after the death of his father, the king's brother Claudius who is at once Hamlet's uncle, married the queen and the king his father's successor. Hamlet does not like to see his mother remarried so quickly, and he thinks about the affair that occurred between Claudius and his mother. He also thinks that his father's death have anything to do with Claudius, and it made him almost mad.

Cladius and queen realize that Hamlet was always depressed and unhappy, but they do not think that Hamlet suspect they have committed a crime.

Hamlet then heard a strange story. For three consecutive nights, the guard of soldiers that kept watch at night have seen a ghost. Horatio, one of his friends also have seen it. The ghost appear at midnight. He was dressed in armor like the clothes are always subject to the king, and his face was very similar to the king. Hamlet is feeling curious finally decided to kept watch so he could see the ghost. If that's true father's ghost, he would like to say something to Hamlet.

Hamlet and Horatio accompanied by one of the guard of soldiers kept watch at the gate. He really wanted to see the ghost. Suddenly Horatio touched the shoulder of Hamlet and whispered that his ghost has come again. Hamlet was shocked to see the ghost. It is similar to the king. Hamlet started to ask something to the ghost. However, the ghost tells Hamlet to go away from Horatio and the soldier that there with him. He started to follow what is said the ghost. Apparently the ghost tells Hamlet that he was actually murdered. And the person who killed him exist in the kingdom. The ghost tells Hamlet to avenge.

Hearing the words of the ghost, Hamlet is very angry and he swore not to tell what happened that night. He was only says to Horatio it all, including pretending to act crazy in front of his uncle so that he does not suspect Hamlet.

Hamlet has a girlfriend named Ophelia. She is the daughter of Polonius, a member of the kingdom known for its experience and wisdom. Ophelia is an obedient child and always according to her father, Ophelia is also the most trusted. However, one day Ophelia complained to her father about Hamlet's behavior is very sad. Polonius thinks that Hamlet's passion for Ophelia always been cool to him. Polonius then immediately told to the king and queen in the hope they both will get married.

Hamlet loves Ophelia, but he always remembered the words to avenge his father's ghost, but how could he plot revenge. Although he hated his uncle, Hamlet was unable to kill human beings. Moreover, the husband killed his own mother. He thinks that he is a coward who can not do anything about it.

He also decided to find out the truth by playing the drama "The Murder of Gonzago". The drama tells of horrific murder in which the duke in the garden named Gonzago poisoned by his brother who later married his widow. If Claudius and queen watch the drama, they will feel guilty for having committed a crime.

It turns out what Hamlet thinks is true. Claudius and Queen began to pale and realize that the drama is similar to what they have done. With haste they fled from the event.

Worried about crime will be discovered, King Claudius eventually persuaded Gertrude, the queen, to talk with Hamlet. He wanted to know how many facts are known to Hamlet. Hamlet is still confused with his revenge plan, accepted the invitation and immediately headed to the queen mother's room. On the way, he kept thinking the right way to avenge his father. Hamlet to kill Claudius thought when he was drunk, angry, or even in bed. However, he did not intend to kill his mother but just make him confess all the mistakes she has done. When He arrived at her mother's room, they were arguing and Hamlet holding his mother's wrist to make him sit. The queen was screaming in horror as she considered that Hamlet will kill her. Behind the curtain there is also a male voice screaming for help. Hamlet thinks it's the voice of the king. He also drew the sword in the direction of the curtain, but in fact it is Polonius. He died instantly there.

Meanwhile, Claudius plans to get rid of Hamlet, because he realizes that Hamlet is dangerous. He decides to send Hamlet abroad and ordered the two courtiers to kill Hamlet upon landing in England. However, it did not happen because Hamlet was treated very well. Hamlet also send a message to Horatio, tell all the events that have happened to him. Hamlet was asked to come soon. When meeting, Hamlet tells all the adventures he has done and also treason against Claudius. When about to leave, Hamlet met two grave-diggers who are making two new graves. Grave diggers said that the cemetery was used for the woman who had died, which turned out to be Ophelia. Ophelia died by suicide. She was saddened by the treatment of Hamlet especially she knows who murdered her father.

Brother of Ophelia, Laertes, thinks the cause of all this could happen was Hamlet. He was very angry with Hamlet. Knowing this, determined to get rid of his nephew Claudius using Laertes anger. Claudius knows that Hamlet and Laertes are fencing expert. He also challenged Laertes and Hamlet to a friendly.
